My name is Grant Finley and I'm an intern.
This blog will serve as documentation of what life has been like for me as an intern in the sports industry. The inspiration for this blog came way of Mark Titus's Club Trillion blog. If you haven't been to his site, I would suggest you give it a look. I haven't read it myself, but I have been aware of it for some time and it wasn't until recently when I was reading a post on the only blog I routinely check - Black Heart Gold Pants - where I saw Titus had been quoted talking about Iowa's quarterback, Ricky Stanzi (the manzi). Naturally, I followed the link and found myself in the middle of the trillion man march.
Titus has a great angle with his blog - an inside look at life from the bench of a major division I basketball program in Ohio State. From all accounts he seems to be a down to earth, self depricating, funny guy who has the best seat in the house and a platform to tell us about it. It was shortly after the concept of his blog sunk in that I thought I could try something similar with my own situation which is trying to start a career in intercollegiate athletics.
I'm 24 years old with a Bachelor's degree in Sport Management, half of the course work completed for my Masters in Business Administartion degree, working my 4th internship and still it seems I'm fighting an uphill battle to land a job in the industry. If anyone has ever told you its a competitive industry, they weren't lying.
Since I began this foray into collegiate athletics I've experienced some highs and lows that are worth documenting which I'll try to highlight and discuss at a later time, but this will be the essence of the blog - the proverbial journey from athlete to student to professional and all the twists, turns, joys, set backs, and randomness that accompanies the ride.
Hopefully this blog will allow you access to something that not everyone gets the chance to see and through me you can get a taste of what it takes to make it in the sports industry. I'll do the best I can to make this a success and hopefully we'll be able to have a little fun along the way. Feel free to leave your thoughts, comments, suggestions etc. I would definitely love the feedback.
So thats what we're all about here. I'll be back next week with a rundown of how I arrived at this point and whats next. Thanks for checkin in with me today and keep it comin.
